The 6th Biennale for Drawing in Israel, held under the auspices of and produced by the
Jerusalem Artists’ House, has established its status as a unique and comprehensive artistic
enterprise since 2001. Like previous editions, Traces VI is held at the Jerusalem Artists’
House and several other venues in the city center (Ticho House, The Jerusalem Print Workshop,
Agripas 12 Gallery, and Barbur Gallery), which together unfold the state of drawing in Israel
and various aspects associated with it. The scores of participating artists and hundreds of
featured works, as well as the diverse spectrum of styles, techniques, media, and themes, come
together to form a grand artistic celebration, attesting to the status of drawing as a central,
current medium.Like all previous editions of Traces, the current exhibition sets out to map contemporary
practice in the field of drawing in Israel; to outline directions and inclinations, while
emphasizing the conceptual and thematic transformations that occurred in this dynamic—
traditional, yet constantly renewing—medium in recent years; and to sustain a dialogue with
the previous biennials.Approximately 700 artists responded to the public appeal to participate in the Biennale,
and most of the 83 participating artists were selected from among these. The previous biennale, Traces V, focused on the line, detached from its natural, traditional
ground—the paper. The current biennale, Traces VI – The Return of Paper/ Reflections
on Drawing, turns the spotlight to paper as a surface and a substance, while elaborating on
the relationship between surface and image, between any surface and the act of drawing.Gershuni’s early 1970s work, The Paper is White on the Outside, but Inside it is Black,
serves as a point of departure for discussion of the intricate relations between the paper’s
flatness and its depth, between the surface and its interior, between content and form.
Traces VI sets out to initiate a dialogue, both direct and indirect, between Gershuni’s
perception of drawing and the artists participating in the Biennale exhibitions. It oscillates
between the real space and the imaginary space, while addressing the interrelations between
the paper surface and that which lies beyond it. In between these two poles, using a variety
of artistic practices, paper appears not only as a material, a flat platform, but also as a space
of creative thinking, which is confronted with other materials and media, as an expression
of personal and artistic conflicts.Invisible lines tie several past artists, whose drawing practice and approach to paper have
set precedents, to contemporary practitioners of the field. The exhibitions at the Jerusalem
Artists’ House and other venues feature 83 artists of different generations who work in a
variety of styles and techniques. The catalogue accompanying Traces VI surveys the works
of the participating artists, accompanied by curatorial texts.Participating Artists:
